Surjan Singh Shekhawat (Aamir Khan) is the cop in charge of the case and clues lead him to Mumbai’s red-light area and to a working girl called Rosie (Kareena Kapoor) and she helps him throughout the case. Surjan is married to Roshni (Rani Mukerji) but their relationship is strained as both are unable to cope with the death of their son. Akira Rai (Anushkha Sharma), a documentary filmmaker, who is also in Ladakh decides to make a project on Samar after reading his personal diary where he writes how he moves back to India after being left heart broken by Meera Thappar (Katrina Kaif), the love of his life who leaves his after an accident.
